Childrens Work and Opportunities for Education

Childrens Work and Opportunities for Education

$114.71

Millennium Development Goals, set the global agenda for human development in order to improve the wellbeing of populations, and in doing so, assigned priority to children. When stakes in global economic competition are too high, and when resources are limited, expanding opportunities of future generations becomes all the more crucial for the developing countries. Childrens work, as much as it may carry an economic value, is also a social relation, and this book attempts to show that crosscultural diversity in childrens lives need not prevent identifying and studying the common factors that affect children. The main argument of the book is that focusing attention only on the childs labor market participation provides only a partial understanding of the variety of work children perform and of the conditions under which the right to education continues to be only a dream for many children. This book targets the students interested in development economics, professionals who work with child laborers, and activists who promote schooling in developing countries. Equal Opportunities?

The integration of the children of immigrants – both those born in the host country (the “second generation”) and those who arrived young enough to be educated in the host country – is of growing policy relevance for OECD countries. This group is entering the labour market in ever larger numbers, and their outcomes are often seen as the benchmark for successful integration policy. The labour market integration of the children of immigrants is an area where comparative international knowledge is gradually evolving, but still underdeveloped. Recent work by the OECD has shown that the children of immigrants tend to have lower employment outcomes than the children of natives in most countries. This technical seminar proceedings sheds light on the issues involved in the labour market integration of the children of immigrants, and discusses policy answers and good practices. The seminar was organised jointly by the the EU Commission and the OECD Secretariat in Brussels on 1 and 2 October 2009.

Arses & Elbows: A Memoir

$18.95

The seventh of eight children, James G. Cullinane was born in 1941 in the small sea village of Abbeyside on the southeast coast of Ireland. Although opportunities for a better life were scarce, he and his family created a home full of love and laughter. Cullinane recalls this treasured time in his boyhood with his honest and affectionate memoir, Arses and Elbows, With fields, rivers, and nearby mountains as his playground, Cullinane, his brothers and sisters, and his friends explored abandoned castles, watched the thrashing machine at work in the grain field, and picked blackberries. As they grew older, the adventures became more daring. Whether it was sneaking a cigarette or spying on amorous couples in the bushes, Cullinane reveled in his youth and learned some of life’s most valuable lessons. Filled with the vivid sights, smells, and sounds of rural Ireland, Arses and Elbows takes you to a simpler time and place, and intimately reveals one boy’s journey to maturity.

 Cooking in Other Women's Kitchens

Cooking in Other Women’s Kitchens

$35

As African American women left slavery and the plantation economy behind, many entered domestic service in southern cities and towns. Cooking was one of the primary tasks they performed in white employers” homes, profoundly shaping southern foodways and culture. In the face of discrimination, long workdays, and low wages, African American cooks worked to assert measures of control over their own lives. As employment opportunities expanded in the twentieth century, most African American women chose to leave cooking for more lucrative and less oppressive manufacturing, clerical, or professional positions. Through letters, autobiography, and oral history, this book evokes African American women”s voices from slavery to the open economy, examining their lives at work and at home.

Emigration and Empire: The Life of Maria S. Rye

Emigration and Empire: The Life of Maria S. Rye

$97.04

Maria S. Rye, a woman motivated by both feminist and philanthropic ideals, devoted her life to the migration of women and girls out of England. This biography gives an account of Rye’s activities from her early engagement with liberal feminism through her association with the Langham Place group in the 1850s, her work as a journalist and with the Society for Promoting Women’s Employment, through to her efforts in women’s and children’s emigration Between 1861 and 1896, Maria S. Rye sent many hundreds of single women out to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, and more than four thousand children to Canada, all with the promise of a better life in the British colonies than they could expect at home in England. Like many nineteenth century advocates of emigration, she saw it as a panacea for many social ills, taking people from impoverishment in the old world to the hope of better prospects in the new. Unlike other advocates, she linked this enthusiasm for emigration with the ideals of liberal feminism, arguing that women and girls should share the opportunities for advancement that the colonies offered to men and boys Rye played a central role in developing organizations to facilitate the migration of women and girls, starting with the Female Middle Class Emigration Society in 1861. After 1869 she concentrated on the migration of so-called gutter-children to Canada, where her pioneering efforts were followed by numerous other philanthropic associates, such as Barnardo This biography analyzes how feminism and philanthropy intertwined in her activities, and how her early concerns with the rights of women to economic opportunity came to be over-ridden by anauthoritarian streak that led to the tragic excesses of her work in juvenile migration.

Essentials of Contemporary Management with Student DVD and Olc with Premium Content Card

Jones and George are dedicated to the challenge of Making It Real for students. The authors present management in a way that makes its relevance obvious even to students who might lack exposure to a real-life management context. Their goal is to relate management theory to real life examples to drive home the message that management matters both because it determines how well organizations perform, and because managers and organizations affect the lives of people who work inside them and people outside the organization, such as customers, communities, and shareholders. Essentials of Management concisely surveys current management theories and research. Through a variety of real world examples from small, medium, and large companies the reader learns how those ideas are used by practicing managers. The organization of this text follows the mainstream functional approach of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling; but the content is flexible and encourages instructors to use the organization they are most comfortable with. One of the most popular features of the book has always been its focus on the Manager as a Person, which discusses managers as real people with their own personalities, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and problems. In the 2nd Edition, the authors expand on this theme by discussing the importance of management competencies -the specific set of skills, abilities, and experiences that gives one manager the ability to perform at a higher level than another in a specific context. The themes of diversity, ethics, globalization, and information technology -all areas of importance that make up the workplace realities that today’s student will encounterin the course of a career- have also been greatly expanded in the 2nd Edition in the text, photographs, unboxed stories, and the end-of-chapter material.

Fathers and Mothers: Dilemmas of the Work-Life Balance: A Comparative Study in Four European Countries

Fathers and Mothers: Dilemmas of the Work-Life Balance: A Comparative Study in Four European Countries

$221.4

This book presents a comparative analysis of the dilemmas faced by working parents with young children in four European countries – France, Italy, Ireland and Denmark – each of which represents a different experience of the evolving gender role process. It was the aim of the study to identify the key issues concerning the reconciliation of work and family roles, with particular emphasis on examining the barriers to men’s greater involvement in domestic and family activities. A major purpose of the study was to develop new social indicators to measure issues of work life balance, which could be utilised in other national and cross-national studies. The book provides an overview of the latest research findings in the four countries, as well as a comparison and synthesis of the situations in these countries. It then presents the results of a survey carried out simultaneously in France, Italy, Denmark and Ireland and a comparative analysis of people’s dilemmas and coping strategies in these countries. The research identifies which factors in the workplace, the home and society at large are associated with ease vs. difficulty in combining work and family life and with parental well-being. The comparative results contribute to a better understanding of the realities of life of young working parents and also highlight the critically important role played by public social and family policies in facilitating equal opportunities and quality of life for this group of workers. Reconciling work and family is now on the social and political agenda. It is to be hoped that the EU, national governments and individual workplaces will continue to develop new and better policies to promote work-lifebalance for men as well as women, for – as the data in the study clearly show – people’s well-being very much depends on it.
